Meningitis Research Foundation still has 3 places left for the 2008 Chicago Marathon on 12 October.

The Bank of America Chicago Marathon is the pinnacle of achievement for elite athletes and everyday runners alike. Join runners from over 120 countries who are taking part in this fantastic event to accomplish a personal dream.

We are looking for participants to raise a minimum of £1000 to take part, and raise vital funds for the Meningitis Research Foundation.

Did you know that around 3,000 people contract Meningitis in the UK each year? Meningitis is everyone’s worst nightmare! Meningitis and septicaemia can affect anyone, of any age. Babies, young children and teenagers or young adults are most at risk but anyone can get it.

The worst aspect of meningitis is the speed at which the disease progresses. From the first symptoms appearing, meningitis and septicaemia can kill in hours. Around 1 in 10 people who contract these diseases die and of those who survive as many as 1 in 4 can be left with after-effects. These range from mild such as concentration, co-ordination and memory loss to more severe brain damage, hearing and sight loss and amputations.

Meningitis Research Foundation currently funds 18 research projects. Since it was founded in 1989, the charity has awarded 118 research grants, leading to many advances in the prevention, detection and treatment of meningitis and septicaemia.
