Help needed D E C Disasters Appeal Indonesia, Phillippines and Vietnam
Why we need your help
More than a thousand people have died and millions are in urgent need of help after a series of devastating disasters across the Asia Pacific region.
Typhoon Ketsana
Typhoon Ketsana slammed into the Philippines on 26 September, killing at least 295 people and affecting around 3.9 million. Thousands have lost their homes and survivors are in desperate need of food, shelter and first aid. To make matters worse, on Saturday 4 October, the Philippines was hit by a second typhoon, called Typhoon Parma.
On 29 September, Typhoon Ketsana moved west to Vietnam continuing its path of destruction, killing at least 170 people and affecting around three million. Thousands of buildings, including homes and schools, have been damaged or destroyed. Many crops of rice and vegetables have also been destroyed by flooding caused by the typhoon.
Indonesia earthquake
An earthquake measuring 7.6 on the Richter scale struck off the west coast of Indonesia on 30 September. This was followed by severe aftershocks.
More than 500 people have died, but this number is likely to increase. Urgent search and rescue operations are going on round the clock as up to 3,000 are thought to still be trapped in rubble. At least 2,400 people are injured and 777,000 are affected with many homes damaged or destroyed.
How you can help
The British Red Cross have organised a collection for the DEC Appeal on Inverness High Street this Saturday (10 October). We need people to come and help us to collect!
The collection is being held from 10am-4pm and ideally we are looking for people to help for two hours either from 10-12, 12-2 or 2-4. Collections buckets and tabards will be provided.
If you can spare a couple of hours to help the people affected by these disasters please call Kate on 01463 231620 or email kloades@redcross.org.uk.
Thank you!
